Original oil painting Morning Stroll at Stony Creek, 12 x 16″ available in the shop

Yesterday morning I headed out to one of my favorite places to paint. Stony Creek, which is part of Branford, CT. This July morning was perfect temperature with a light breeze. As I strolled around the streets I decided to capture this scene looking down Leetes Island Road toward town. Folks were gathering outside having a cup of coffee, walking their dogs and a group of kayakers were heading out for a trip around the Thimble Islands.

I set up easel under the shade of a large tree next to the sidewalk and the park was on the other side of me. I enjoy several small chats with a people who were strolling by but then about halfway through the painting session, several buses parked right in front of my view. I continued to paint taking a peak around the vehicles and trying to memorize the scene in my mind.

“Morning Stroll in Stony Creek,” invites you to take a leisurely saunter through its charming streets. This oil painting captures a quintessential small-town scene where life seems to move at a gentler pace.

Picture this: a curving road gently guiding a few cars along its path, framed on the left by an array of delightful houses. One house, bold and unapologetic in its purple hue, stands out like a beacon of cheer. Nearby, the Marketplace, a quaint café and pizzeria beckons with blue umbrellas and an “Open” sign, promising a cozy spot for a coffee break or a slice of pizza.

On the right side, a grand tree reaches out its leafy arms, while glimpses of a stony creek beach, Thimble Islands and the Long Island Sound peak through. The background is a tapestry of additional homes and lush greenery, layering depth and that snug sense of community we all crave.

The play of light and shadow was a delight to capture, a perfect July day that bathes everything in warmth. It’s the kind of scene that makes you want to inhale deeply and bask in the day’s brilliance. The perfect marriage of acrylic and oil techniques gives the painting vitality and texture, capturing the unique glow that makes Stony Creek a hidden gem worth savoring.

Creating “Morning Stroll in Stony Creek” was a joyful experience, as I wanted to convey the tranquility and charm of this lovely village. I hope that when you look at this piece, you can feel the same sense of peace and contentment that I felt while painting it.
