Painting in the Storm: Live Wedding Painting at Mystic Seaport for Michelle and Tom

A Love Story Told Through Storm Clouds
Some wedding days unfold like a fairytale—and others unfold like a test of endurance. Michelle and Tom’s wedding in September 2023 was a breathtaking celebration of love, beauty, and resilience, all set against one of the most dramatic weather days of the year in New England.
Their ceremony took place at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Waterbury, Connecticut—a majestic, historic church that provided a sacred and elegant setting for their vows. Afterward, they made their way to their reception at the Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic, CT, arriving in classic style in a beautifully restored Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud.
A Stormy Reception at Mystic Seaport
But the weather had its own plans.
By the time guests gathered under the open-air historic boat shed at Mystic Seaport, the rain had turned into a downpour. Blustering winds, soaked walkways, and streams of water cutting through the dirt path added drama and intensity to an already emotional day. As their live wedding painter, I was working on a 3-foot by 4-foot canvas—an unusually large size for painting on-site—and at one point, I had to hold the canvas with one hand and paint with the other just to keep it steady.
Despite the weather, the atmosphere was electric with joy. Guests, armed with umbrellas and big hearts, danced and celebrated without hesitation. Michelle and Tom’s love shone through every moment, and I was determined to honor that in paint.
Preparing to Paint This Once-in-a-Lifetime Moment
In the months leading up to the wedding, I made three trips to Mystic Seaport to study the location. I took reference photos, made preliminary sketches for Michelle and Tom to review, and even painted en plein air to understand the light and color palette of the area. Although Michelle originally envisioned a glowing pastel sunset, I decided to stay true to the reality of the day—honoring the mood, color, and natural elements that made this celebration so unique.
To convey the storm’s effect while still highlighting the romance, I used layers of acrylic and oil paints with transparent colors like Indian Yellow, Transparent Red Oxide, and Ultramarine Blue. These tones helped me create the glowing reflections, soft diffused light, and the gentle movement of fabrics and water.
The Final Painting: Beauty in the Real Moment
In the final painting, you’ll see the boat shed glowing with warm lights, guests holding umbrellas, the newlyweds sharing a romantic kiss on the waterfront, and loved ones gathered—weather and all. This piece doesn’t just capture what the day looked like. It captures what it felt like: bold, beautiful, and full of heart.
