A Glimpse into Brookelyn and Pasquale’s Special Day
Every wedding I paint has its unique charm, and Brookelyn and Pasquale’s wedding at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Waterbury, Connecticut, was nothing short of spectacular. Their vision was clear: to capture the solemn beauty of their ceremony in one of the most ornate and historic churches in the area. The Majestic Basilica of the Immaculate Conception
The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception stands as a testament to historical grandeur and architectural splendor. Established in the late 19th century, this Roman Catholic basilica has served as a spiritual landmark in Waterbury. Its towering structure, adorned with intricate stained glass windows and statues of saints, offers a serene and awe-inspiring atmosphere.
One of the most striking features of the basilica is the elaborate altar. Held aloft by four marble columns, the altar’s golden roof is crowned with two winged angels, creating a heavenly scene that draws the eyes upward. Above, the gold-domed ceiling glows softly, adding to the church’s ethereal beauty. These elements combined to make the perfect backdrop for Brookelyn and Pasquale’s wedding ceremony.
Preparing for the Big Day
To ensure that I could do justice to the Basilica’s grandeur in my painting, I visited the church a week before the wedding. On a quiet Friday at noon, I attended the service, taking in the ambiance and capturing essential details in my sketchbook. This preparation was crucial; I needed to understand the spatial dynamics and how to balance the church’s vastness with the intimacy of the couple standing at the altar.
The sheer scale of the basilica was daunting. I had to find a way to highlight Brookelyn and Pasquale without making them appear dwarfed by the grand architecture. My sketches focused on the altar, the golden roof, and the positioning of the couple. These initial drawings were my roadmap for the final piece.
Capturing the Ceremony
On the day of the wedding, the Basilica was filled with friends and family, their joy and excitement palpable. My easel was set up discreetly in the back, allowing me to blend into the background while still having a clear view of the ceremony. The challenge was immense but exhilarating.
The intricate details of the church, from the stained glass to the statues, required careful attention. I used a watercolor sepia color pencil to begin my drawing. Although the moment I painted was taken after the ceremony during the photo session. I knew this was the perfect moment to capture their love and beauty. They were so happy and filled with joy, surrounded by their family and loved ones.
A Celebration at Aria
After the beautiful ceremony, everyone headed to Aria, a stunning banquet venue just a 15-minute drive away. Aria boasts two grand ballrooms, lush outdoor gardens, and scenic patios, making it an ideal location for such a large and joyous gathering. Throughout the evening, guests mingled and celebrated, and many stopped by my easel to watch the progress of the painting.

Finishing Touches
Once the wedding day concluded, I took the painting back to my studio. I used acrylics to lay the groundwork, which allowed for quicker drying and layering. The oil paints brought out the intricate details of the Basilica’s interior and the soft, warm glow of the golden dome.
