Long Island Live Painting: Katerina and Evangelos’ Magical Wedding at Hempstead House
Katerina and Evangelos’ wedding was nothing short of breathtaking, set against the backdrop of the historic Hempstead House at Sands Point Preserve on Long Island. As a live wedding painter, I had the privilege of capturing the magic of their first dance in a timeless piece of art. The grandeur of the venue, the meticulous details of the event, and the love that filled the air made this an unforgettable experience.

The Historic Hempstead House: A Long Island Treasure
The Hempstead House, a Tudor-style mansion built in 1912, is one of the four mansions within Sands Point Preserve. Originally owned by Howard Gould, a railroad tycoon, and later purchased by Daniel and Florence Guggenheim, the mansion is a symbol of the opulent Gold Coast era on Long Island. With its limestone façade, intricate architectural details, and sweeping views of the Long Island Sound, the estate has become a sought-after venue for weddings, galas, and cultural events. The combination of history and elegance provided the perfect canvas for Katerina and Evangelos’ special day.
A Picturesque Setting for a Stunning Celebration
The day began with a beautiful ceremony at a nearby Greek Orthodox church, honoring the couple’s heritage and faith. Guests then made their way to the Hempstead House, arriving around 4:00 PM for cocktail hour. This portion of the event took place on the lush lawn overlooking the water, with elegant umbrellas providing shade, string lights adding a warm ambiance, and a selection of hors d’oeuvres served as music filled the air. Meanwhile, the couple and their wedding party gathered on the back lawn for family photos, taking advantage of the natural light and panoramic waterfront views.
The Vision Behind the Painting
Katerina had a clear vision for her wedding painting: she wanted to capture their first dance surrounded by their immediate family. I knew this would be a challenging but rewarding composition. The architecture of the room, with its grand columns, tall windows, and intricate ceiling adorned with string lights, needed to be showcased. The magnificent floral arrangements, designed with care and creativity, added to the elegance of the space.
One particular element Katerina was passionate about was the train of her dress. Before the wedding, she sent me photos from her fittings, highlighting the intricate lace details and its elegant length. Knowing that many brides bustle their dress after the ceremony for easier dancing, I made it a priority to capture reference photos of the train before the first dance began.
The Art of Live Wedding Painting: More Than Meets the Eye
Live wedding painting might seem like a straightforward task, but it requires strategic problem-solving and artistic decision-making. The first challenge was finding a perspective that allowed for a clear view of the couple, their family, and the stunning interior decor. The second challenge involved capturing a pleasing pose of the couple, ensuring both faces were visible and recognizable.
During the first dance, I positioned myself strategically, staying behind the videographer and photographer to avoid obstructing their shots. That evening, I painted the couple into the scene live, providing entertainment for the guests and allowing them to witness the creative process. The remaining figures were added later in my studio, using the photos I captured during the family session.
Studio Work: Where the Magic Comes Together
Once back in my studio, the real puzzle-solving began. I sifted through hundreds of photos and videos, sketching multiple compositions to find the most natural arrangement for the family members. This process is time-intensive but crucial for creating a painting that feels cohesive and authentic.
The end result was a painting that not only captured Katerina and Evangelos’ first dance but also the architectural beauty of the Hempstead House, the warmth of their family, and the romantic atmosphere of their wedding day. When the painting was complete, they opted for framing services, allowing me to deliver a fully finished piece, ready to hang and enjoy immediately.
A Timeless Memory of a Long Island Wedding
This Long Island live painting now serves as a cherished memory for Katerina and Evangelos—a visual narrative of their love story and a piece of art that will be passed down through generations. The Hempstead House at Sands Point Preserve proved to be the perfect setting, with its historical elegance and stunning views providing a captivating backdrop.
Special thanks go to Teresa and her team from Above All Events, who orchestrated the day with precision and creativity. Their attention to detail ensured a seamless celebration for the couple and their guests.
Live wedding painting continues to grow in popularity as couples seek meaningful, personalized keepsakes from their special day. For me, each painting is an opportunity to tell a story, and Katerina and Evangelos’ wedding was a beautiful chapter to illustrate in the heart of Long Island’s stunning Gold Coast.
