Magical Moments Plein Air Painting
There’s something magical about the Branford River at golden hour. It’s a scene that never fails to inspire me, and this particular evening was no exception. Standing by the water’s edge, the sun hung low in the sky, casting a warm, golden glow that made everything—boats, buildings, and trees alike—radiate with life. I set up my easel right next to the marina, where a handful of large boats rested high on stilts, waiting for their turn in the water. To my right, the familiar buzz of Nellie Green’s waterfront restaurant filled the air, mingling with the breeze carrying scents of salt and summer. And just beyond, I could see Stony Creek Brewery, one of my family’s favorite spots to unwind.
I began this painting on location, starting with acrylics to capture the fleeting light. The boats floated lazily, their white hulls reflecting the golden tones of the sunset. The vibrant red of a waterfront building popped against the lush greens of the trees, and the soft hues of the nearby houses seemed to blend seamlessly into the scenery. It was one of those evenings where time seemed to stand still, and I found myself completely immersed in the moment, determined to bring this serene beauty to life on canvas.
Later, back in my studio, I returned to the piece, adding layers of oil paint to give the scene more depth and richness. The shift from acrylic to oil allowed me to build texture and enhance the play of light on the water, creating an almost luminous quality that mirrored the warmth of that evening.
This wasn’t my first time painting along the Branford River. Back in July of 2017, on a bright and breezy Saturday morning, I had the opportunity to paint on the other side of the brewery. That piece, titled Boats and Brews, was inspired by the lively atmosphere and the way the light danced on the water that morning. It was a joy to paint, and I was thrilled when it was later accepted into the Connecticut Plein Air Society Annual Exhibition.
Golden Hour and Golden Moments
These experiences along the river have a special place in my heart, not just because of the art but because of the family memories tied to them. My family and I often find ourselves visiting both Stony Creek Brewery and Nellie Green’s, enjoying the delicious food and the welcoming atmosphere. Whether we’re sharing a meal together, soaking up the view, or simply relaxing, it’s a reminder of the simple joys of being together in a place we love.
This painting of the Branford River is more than just a snapshot of a beautiful evening; it’s a celebration of a place that feels like home—a place where art, family, and community come together. It’s a piece of my story, and I hope that story shines through for anyone who sees it.
