As the sun began its gentle descent over the Branford River one late September afternoon, I found myself wandering through the Indian Neck area, soaking in the quiet charm of this coastal Connecticut gem. Crossing the bridge over the river, I paused to take in the view—the kind of view that invites you to linger, to breathe, to dream.
The light was magical, painting the world in soft oranges and golds. The large ship factory buildings stood tall against the horizon, their outlines softened by the glow of the setting sun. Below, the still waters mirrored the sky’s colors, cradling the boats docked at Barberi Marina. In the distance, the Stony Creek Brewery peeked through the dense shrubs and wild grasses, adding a touch of modern life to the timeless beauty of the scene.
Back in my studio, I worked to translate this moment into oil on canvas. Though I relied on reference photos, the memories of that evening—the light, the sounds, the crisp autumn air—infused every brushstroke. I couldn’t help but reflect on the history of this place. Just beyond the factory buildings, where new apartments are being built, once stood older structures that housed workers during the bustling days of the MIF Foundry over 150 years ago. It’s fascinating to imagine what life was like then, with the hum of industry filling the air.
This painting, “End of the Season, Branford River,” is more than just an image; it’s a story of a place, a moment, and the passage of time. The views from this side of the river are stunning in all directions, offering a quintessential New England vista. It’s a reminder of the beauty that surrounds us when we take the time to truly see.
